YVWA General Meeting: Important Wine Country Plan and AVA Announcements

The Yucaipa Valley Wine Alliance will be hosting a general meeting for all members on Sunday, December 3rd at 1 pm. We have several important areas of discussion, including but not limited to:

+Updates on the Yucaipa Valley Wine Country Specific Plan, and how members of the community can get involved.

+Updates on the imminent publication of the Yucaipa Valley AVA Petition in the Federal Register.

+The emergence of Pierce's disease within the Yucaipa Valley and the steps we can take to mitigate further spread.

+Updates on Grant Funding for vineyard installations and instructions to apply.

  • The event will be held at the Suveg Cellars Tasting Room at 12132 California Street, Yucaipa CA 92399.

  • The meeting will begin at 1 pm and should last 90 min.

Holiday Food and Wine Pairing Course with Sommelier Craig Suveg

We're excited to announce that we will be hosting a Holiday Food and Wine Pairing Class with Sommelier and Winemaker Craig Suveg on Monday, November 20th. 

This food and wine pairing course will include bites of ham, turkey, prime rib, and a surprise dessert! Wine pairings will also be included in this course.

In this class you will:

  • Learn about how food and wine pair together, and how the elements of fat, acidity, tannin, and flavor combine to create complementary pairings of food and wine. 

  • Learn about all the classic food and wine pairings that have withstood the test of time, and why these pairings work so well.

  • Learn about the best ways to pair wine with classic holiday foods, including ham, turkey, prime rib, and dessert. We'll be eating all of these items while pairing wines in real-time, so come hungry!

This class will be held in the Suveg Cellars Barrel Room on Monday, November 20th from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm.

Dinner in the Vineyard Fundraiser for the YVWA Vinification Fund

So far, the YVWA Vinification Fund has been able to raise over $2500 to help new growers in the Yucaipa Valley pay for their vines. We are ecstatic to announce our Dinner in the Vineyard Fundraiser at Pendelton Vineyards on June 4th, which will put us over the top of our $5000 goal for the Vinification Fund!

Dinner in the Vineyard will take place smack dab in the middle of one of Yucaipa's largest vineyards, planted by Cesar Roldan in 2020. Enjoy a live acoustic Spanish guitar performance and a catered dinner from 5-8 pm, followed by a discussion from our local winemakers and growers about the future of our nascent Yucaipa Valley Wine Industry.

Tickets are $50 per person, and 50 tickets will be available. Wine will be available for purchase from the YVWA at the venue and is not included in the ticket price. 

100% of the proceeds from our tickets go to the YVWA Vinification Fund, a separate stand-alone fund that will pay for vines planted by Yucaipa Valley growers. 100% of all proceeds donated to the Vinification Fund will be allocated to growers in the form of grant funding to help offset the initial costs of vineyard projects.

YVWA Industry Day - Meetup on April 18th

The Yucaipa Valley Wine Alliance will be hosting its first Industry Day of the year at Suveg Cellars California Street Tasting Room on Sunday April 18th at 1pm.

Over the past year we've had many important events and noteworthy milestones in the development of the Yucaipa Valley Wine Industry. However because of COVID-19, we've been unable to host events where all current and aspiring members can meet each other comfortably. This event will provide the opportunity for vineyard owners, vintners, and those looking to aid with the development of a Yucaipa Valley Wine Industry to all meet face to face, and at long last collaborate and communicate directly.

YVWA President Craig Suveg will provide an update about the state of affairs in the Yucaipa Valley, and answer questions about a variety of topics from the coming AVA, to the Overlay District, new vineyard development, new vintner development, and more. He will be speaking at 1pm, and after the conclusion of his speech there will be ample opportunity to ask questions and meet new members.

  • The event will be held at the Suveg Cellars Tasting Room at 12132 California Street, Yucaipa CA 92399.

  • Craig Suveg will be speaking at 1pm at the Tasting Room.

  • After the conclusion of the speech, those interested in staying and networking or chatting will be free to do so throughout the afternoon.

  • If you are considering making wine, or planting vines, this is a great opportunity for you to learn more about the process.

Community Action Night and YVWA Petition Launch

To the Community of Yucaipa,

The Yucaipa Valley Wine Alliance will be hosting a Community Action Night and Petition Launch at 6pm on Tuesday October 13th outside of the Suveg Cellars Tasting Room.

At this event, we will discuss our action plan for the new petition that we will be circulating throughout the Yucaipa, update you on progress with the overlay district, and discuss ways in which we can work together to help achieve the ultimate goal of a boutique wine industry in the Yucaipa Valley.

Our new petition, which aims to prevent Yucaipa’s North Bench from becoming the latest casualty of clustered residential development, will have a strong grassroots efforts which we want YOU to be a part of. We will discuss how to get involved at next Tuesday’s event.

Event Details

The event will be held outside the Suveg Cellars Tasting Room at 12132 California Street, Yucaipa CA 92399.

No alcohol will be served at this event. This is simply an opportunity for us to come together, and discuss viable plans of action to accomplish our goals.

We have about 40 chairs, and we may run out. Please bring your own seating to ensure that you have a place to sit.

Vineyard Canopy Management Class with Craig Suveg on August 1st

On the 1stof August, President of the YVWA Craig Suveg will be teaching vineyard canopy management in his personal Cabernet Vineyard! For all aspiring grape growers and viticulturists, this class offers indispensable information about how to maintain a vineyard during the peak summer months.

In this class you will:

  • Learn the proper technique for cutting back vines

  • Learn vine training, and how to encourage the proper type of vine growth

  • Help to prune Craig’s vine’s, and learn about the different styles of canopy management

  • See firsthand tools, equipment, and other materials

The class will be held outdoors in the vineyard, and we recommend wearing outside clothing appropriate for gardening. Bring boots and gloves.

Retail tickets will be $50.

If you’d like to join the Yucaipa Valley Wine Alliance for a $50 yearly membership, your first class will be free! Just make sure to email us an say you’re attending. Classes are normally only $25 for members of the Alliance! And free for Industry Members!

Greetings!

On October 28th at 6:30 pm, Wine Alliance Board Members Treasurer Mike Stubbs and Preston Todd will be teaching an introductory course on financing vineyards and the ins and outs of getting vineyards in the ground.

Mike is the Head of Accounting for Suveg Cellars and has multiple decades of experience as a corporate CFO. His knowledge of winery finance is wide-ranging, playing an integral role in the success of Suveg Cellars. Preston Todd is the Head of Viticulture for the Yucaipa Valley Wine Alliance, & Owner of North Cork Winery. Preston has installed more vineyards than anyone in the Yucaipa Valley. 

For anyone looking to invest in the Yucaipa Valley Wine Industry, and get grapes in the ground by next spring, we cannot emphasize the value of this class enough.

In this class you will:

  • Learn costs associated with vineyards

  • Take steps to take to get ready for planting

  • Learn about all materials necessary to get started

  • Assess pros and cons of hiring a crew vs. doing the work manually

To all Alliance Members and Members of the Public,

For the last year, the Yucaipa Valley Wine Alliance has fought tirelessly for the development of a sustainable viticultural industry in the Yucaipa Valley and pushed for economic development in the Uptown Yucaipa District to transform our city into a destination.

We're calling on all citizens of the Yucaipa Valley who want a better future for this community to participate in an open forum discussion, and to help us decide the best course of action for organizing ourselves to effect real change and protect the vision that we have been working toward.

At this event, we will discuss:

+The failure of business development efforts in the Yucaipa Uptown, and how we can best address the lack of restaurants and amenities that Yucaipa residents have so long desired.

+The progress that has been made on the Yucaipa Valley AVA Petition, the progress that has been made on the City of Yucaipa Overlay District, and how you can be a part of shaping the City's plans for the coming wine industry.

+The best methods to pull our community together and petition the responsible parties to ensure that the development of our Uptown District and Wine Industry progresses swiftly, and without obstruction.

+This forum will be held from 6:30-8:30 pm on Tuesday, October 15th

Yucaipa Valley Wine Alliance Wine Making Bootcamp

The Yucaipa Valley Wine Alliance is pleased to announce the opportunity to participate in the YVWA Wine Making Boot Camp. This year you’ll have the opportunity to participate in one of 2 winemaking sessions - Grenache Rose in early September or Syrah in late September!

Get hands-on training from award winning winemaker, Anita Matlock of Wildwood Oak Winery. You can be a part of every step of the process from crushing to bottling. Learn vital skills in the winemaking process such as: 

  • How to properly work machinery like a grape crusher and destemmer

  • How to introduce yeast to your crushed juice

  • How to sterilize and it's importance in the winemaking process

  • How to punch down must and manage the fermentation process

  • How to test for total acidity, volatile acidity, and ph at the end of fermentation

  • How to rack wine, and managing the second stage of fermentation called malolactic fermentation.

  • How to conduct barrel tasting, as well as tops offs throughout the aging process

  • How to bottle wine and run an effective bottling line

In addition to learning how to make wine, you'll walk away with 3 bottles per person! Not too many people are able to open a bottle of wine that they made from scratch!

  • The tentative class schedule is as follows:

  • Saturday, August 31st 9 – 11 am for Orientation and Tour of the Winery. You'll learn about the types of yeast and additives we will be using and how to decide what to use.

  • TBD based on harvest date, but the Grenache Rose will be harvested early September and the Syrah will be harvest late September.

  • For the next 7-10 days, you can participate in adding the yeast, one or more punching down of the “must” and watching the fermentation process through completion. Punching down takes about 10 minutes and we will punch down 3-4 times per day so there are many opportunities to participate.

  • We will then “rack” the wine and start secondary fermentation called Malolactic Fermentation.

  • It can take a month or two to be completed and we will rack again. The class will pick a timeframe that works for the majority but assume it will be weekend morning.

  • The wine is now in its aging process. During this time, we will all rack in intervals with the first time being in one month then two months then three months. Racking takes a couple of hours.

  • Next August, you will bottle the wine. That takes about 4 hours and we will pick a weekend morning that works for everyone.

  • You are not required to participate in every activity but you are welcome to if your time permits.

This winemaking class is limited to 10 people! That's it, only 10 slots so reserve one while you can!

You have the option to help make a red wine (Syrah) and/or white wine (Grenache Rose). Price for each workshop is $150 but if you sign up for both, the price is $275. If you’d like to sign up for both workshops as a couple, get an additional $50 dollars off and reserve your spot for $500.

If you have an Industry Membership through the Alliance, you may attend this class for free! You will not be able to take free wine home, but you will be able to participate at your leisure.

The Yucaipa Valley Wine Alliance is proud to present our first Summer Gala, a live auction fundraiser to benefit the growth of the Yucaipa Valley Wine Industry.

This event will be hosted at the Yucaipa Performing Arts Center in partnership with the City of Yucaipa, and will be one of the first major events held in the banquet hall of our city’s new facility.

Bid on over 40 silent and live auction items, where the proceeds go directly to the Yucaipa Valley Wine Alliance to support crucial efforts to cultivate new vineyards, vintners, wineries, wine education, and much more. Auction items include:

On the 6th of April, Director of Viticulture for the YVWA Preston Todd will be teaching students how to set up a trellis system in his commercial vineyard! For all aspiring grape growers and viticulturists, this is a class offers indispensable information about setting up a vineyard, and maintaining it long term. 

In this class you will:

  • Learn different trellis styles and how they work

  • Discuss types of wire, insulation, and endposts

  • Learn about vineyard layout

  • See firsthand tools, equipment, and other materials

The meet up will be at Suveg Cellars California Street Tasting Room on Sunday, February 24th at 1pm. Almost the entire board will be present, and available for questions for the duration of the hour and a half event.

Food will be provided for all attendees. Invite anyone who is interested in participating in the Yucaipa Valley Wine Industry. This is a great community building opportunity for us to spread the word about our mission, and work together to accomplish it.

On Saturday, February 9th Director of Viticulture for the YVWA Preston Todd will be teaching a hands on class detailing how to properly prune a vineyard!

If you’re interested in growing and maintaining a vineyard, this is an essential class to take, as pruning is one of the most important aspects of vineyard maintenance. Good pruning technique can make or break a vineyard, influencing the health of the vines, the health of the fruit, and overall yields.

In this class you will:

+Prune actual vines in a commercial vineyard

+Learn proper pruning technique, and the different styles of pruning

+Learn how pruning affects your vines, fruit, and crop size

The class will be held outdoors in the vineyard, and we recommend wearing outside clothing appropriate for gardening. Bring boots, gloves, and if you have them, a small hand held set of pruning shears.

Tickets to the public are $65.

On August 25th, Board Members Tina Leuer and Anita Matlock will host a Grape Growing and Vineyard Workshop at Tina's Vineyard in Yucaipa. Learn about growing grapes and managing a vineyard whether you're looking to start your own winery, or just make your own wine.

The class will cover:

  • Vineyard Management
  • Pest Management Strategies
  • Beneficial Practices to Improve Soil
  • Growing Grapes for Wine in the Yucaipa Valley
  • Federal Funding Opportunities
  • Much More!

The event includes a light breakfast and working in the vineyard so make sure to come wearing appropriate footwear. 

The event will also include speakers from the Wine Alliance, UCR, several Resource Conservation Districts, and more!

7 Course Benefit Dinner for the Yucaipa Valley Wine Alliance

The Yucaipa Valley Wine Alliance is excited to announce a 7-course dinner with wine pairings to raise additional funds for the creation of an AVA in the Yucaipa Region.

The meal will be prepared by acclaimed Restaurant Critic and Chef David Cohen, paired with wines from Suveg Cellars as well as Wildwood Oak Winery.

This dinner will be held at the Original Suveg Cellars Winery, at 37296 Ironwood Dr, Yucaipa, CA 92399. Hors D'oeuvre Hour starts at 6 pm, accompanied by a Cello performance by Craig Suveg.

Tickets are $75 per person and $62.50 per person for Wine Alliance Members. If you are in the Wine Alliance and Would like to purchase tickets at a discounted rate, check your email for the link!

One hour of pass around bite-size plates. Bites consist of:

Fig tart with goat cheese, caramelized onions, pine nuts and arugula

Skewers of Idiazabal cheese, Basque sausage, and piquillo peppers

Paired with Suveg Cellars Grenache and Wildwood Oak Chardonnay

Course 2

Seaweed salad, topped with ahi poke

Paired with Suveg Cellars Roussanne

Course 3

Cold Tuscan melon soup with coconut milk, fresh mint, and smoked spicy paprika

Paired with Suveg Cellars Viognier

Course 4

Langostino cocktail with diced mango, jicama, and marinated red onion, drizzled with an Indonesian sambal sauce blended with fresh ginger, roasted tomato sauce, and sesame oil

Paired with Suveg Cellars Nero D'Avola

Course 5

Venison meatball atop a polenta square topped with balsamic vinegar, red currant jam, and a red wine reduction

Paired with Suveg Cellars and Wildwood Oak Syrahs

Course 6

A duo of smoked chicken with a chimi churi sauce and smoked salmon with a red mole sauce (contains nuts), served with a side of quinoa salad tossed with watermelon, candied walnuts and crumbled herbed feta cheese

Paired with Suveg Cellars Mourvedre

Course 7

Blueberry fruit compote over urfa biber brownies (sweet spiciness) garnished with fresh red raspberries and a dollop of whipped cream

Paired with Wildwood Oak Cabernet
